EV Range & Consumption
EV consumption from a trip (kWh or battery % over a distance) in Wh/km, kWh/100 km and mi/kWh, range from usable capacity, and a planned trip’s energy and cost.
Consumption in four units, the arithmetic range for your usable capacity, and for a planned trip the energy, the share of the pack, the charging energy after losses and the cost at your price.
Example: 42 kWh over 250 km is 168 Wh/km (16.8 kWh/100 km, 3.70 mi/kWh); a 60 kWh usable pack gives 357 km; a 400 km trip needs 67.2 kWh — 112 % of the pack, one stop — 74.7 kWh from the grid at 90 %.
Energy per distance,
in four spellings.
How consumption is measured, why the units are the same fact, and what the range figure is and is not.
Consumption
An EV’s consumption is energy per distance. From a trip you can measure it as kWh used (the car’s trip meter or a charger’s delivered energy) or as battery percentage used times the usable capacity, divided by the distance. Wh/km, kWh/100 km (÷ 10), mi/kWh (1000 ÷ Wh/km ÷ 1.609344) and kWh/100 mi are the same number in different units; the page converts between all four.
Range and the trip
Range = usable capacity ÷ consumption is arithmetic, not a rating: it assumes the trip you measured. A planned trip’s energy is consumption × distance, its share of the pack is that divided by usable capacity (over 100 % means a charging stop), and the energy from the grid is the battery energy divided by the charging efficiency you enter — AC charging typically loses some percent to the onboard charger and battery heating; the loss is yours to state. Cost is grid energy × your price per kWh.
What changes the number
Speed (aerodynamic drag grows with the square of speed), cold weather and cabin heating, hills, load, tyres and regeneration all move consumption; a short trip is dominated by warm-up. Usable capacity is less than the nominal pack size and falls with age. No vehicle data, rated ranges or efficiency defaults are embedded. Nothing leaves the browser; the same four anonymous usage counts as the rest of the site apply.
SOURCES
- Wh/km = kWh × 1000 ÷ km; kWh/100 km = Wh/km ÷ 10; mi/kWh = 1000 ÷ Wh/km ÷ 1.609344; range = usable kWh ÷ consumption; charging energy = trip energy ÷ efficiency; capacity, efficiency, price are yours
