Energy and cost
Energy in kilowatt-hours is power in watts × hours ÷ 1,000. Each load runs a number of hours per day on a number of days per week, so its average per calendar day is W × h × (days ÷ 7) ÷ 1,000, and quantity multiplies it. Cost is kWh × your price per kWh, plus a standing charge per day if you enter one. Periods are defined explicitly: a week is 7 days, a year 365 days, a month 365 ÷ 12 = 30.42 days — so twelve months equal one year exactly.
The power figure
The result is only as good as the watts you enter. A nameplate rating is the maximum the appliance can draw; anything with a thermostat or a compressor — fridges, freezers, heaters, air conditioners — cycles on and off and averages far less. For those, use the annual kWh on the energy label divided by 8,760 h to get the average watts, or measure with a plug-in meter. Standby draw counts as hours per day of 24 at its own small wattage.
What the bill has that this page does not
Tariffs vary by supplier, plan, time of day and tier; taxes, levies and discounts apply differently everywhere. This page uses one flat price per kWh and one standing charge, both yours — it does not know your plan and assumes nothing. For time-of-use tariffs, enter each rate period as its own row with its own hours and price them separately.
