How weight is calculated

A pipe is treated as an ideal annulus: area = π × wall × (outside diameter − wall). Mass per metre = area × 1,000 mm × density ÷ 10⁹; lb/ft is that value converted with exact factors (1 kg = 2.20462 lb, 1 m = 3.28084 ft). For carbon steel at 7,850 kg/m³ this reproduces the published plain-end weights of ASME B36.10M (for example 2 in Sch 40 ≈ 3.65 lb/ft) to within 0.5 %. Real pipe differs by wall tolerance (typically −12.5 %), alloy, and coating; use supplier or mill data for purchasing.

Where the NPS and schedule dimensions come from

Outside diameters and nominal wall thicknesses are the ASME B36.10M values as commonly published, for NPS 1/8 through 10 in Schedules 40 (STD) and 80 (XS). The table ships as a versioned dataset and its version is printed in every CSV. It has been spot-checked against a published table but not yet reviewed line by line against the standard by an engineer — which is why this utility is a draft. Anything not listed can be entered as outside diameter × wall in millimetres or inches.

What this utility does not do

No Schedule 10/160/XXS or NPS 12 and above yet (sources disagree on some of those walls, so they wait for review). No water-filled weight, no pressure rating, no fittings, no structural check. Inputs stay in your browser; the same four anonymous usage counts as the rest of the site apply.
