Brick, Block & Mortar

Bricks or blocks for a wall from the unit size and joint, openings taken out, your waste allowance, mortar volume from the joint geometry, and bags.

A unit count, pack count, and mortar quantity for a single-leaf wall that you can trace to the unit size, joint width, and area you entered.

Example: A 10 m² wall with 1.5 m² of openings in UK bricks (215 × 65 mm, 10 mm joints) takes 504 bricks and about 0.15 m³ of mortar.

The coordinating cell

In a wall each unit occupies its work size plus one joint along and one joint up (the coordinating size: 225 × 75 mm for a UK brick with 10 mm joints, 8 × 2⅔ in for a US modular brick with ⅜ in joints). Units = net wall area ÷ that cell, rounded up. The familiar “60 per m²” and “7 per ft²” fall out of the geometry (59.3 and 6.86); a different unit or joint changes them, which is why the sizes are inputs.

Mortar from the joints

Per unit, the bed joint is joint × wall width × (length + joint) and the head joint is joint × wall width × height; mortar = units × that volume, plus your waste allowance. Bags are rounded up from the yield per bag printed on the mortar you buy — no yield is assumed. Frogs, perforations, and dropped mortar add to real use; the allowance is where that goes.

Which walls, and what is not decided

A single leaf, one unit thick, in stretcher bond, with openings subtracted. Cavity walls (count each leaf), ties, lintels, piers, copings, and bond patterns with more cuts are outside the model. The preset sizes are common work sizes as manufacturers list them, not values transcribed from a standard — check them against the product, or type your own. Nothing here is a structural or code judgement. Inputs stay in your browser; the same four anonymous usage counts as the rest of the site apply.
