How many tiles or planks an area needs from the tile size and grout joint, with your waste allowance, boxes by count or coverage, and the spare after rounding.

How the count is formed, why the joint matters, and what the count leaves to you.

The cell and the count

Laid in a grid, each tile occupies its own size plus one grout joint along each axis (joints are shared between neighbours, so one joint width per tile, not two). Tiles needed = area ÷ ((length + joint) × (width + joint)), rounded up to a whole tile. A 300 × 300 mm tile with a 3 mm joint occupies 303 × 303 mm, so 20 m² takes 218 tiles, not 223. Planks and sheets with no joint use their own size.

Waste, boxes, and the spare

The waste allowance is yours to set — edge cuts, diagonal or offset patterns, and breakage differ by job, so no figure is assumed. Boxes are rounded up from the tile count when tiles are sold by the piece, or from the area (with waste) when boxes are sold by coverage; the spare tiles or area after rounding are shown so the order is not a mystery.

What the count does not decide

This is a count, not a layout: where cuts fall, whether offcuts can be reused, border tiles, trims, adhesive, and grout quantities are outside it. Get the area from your measurements (the Square Footage & Area utility handles irregular rooms). Prices are whatever you enter.
