Example: A 20 × 12 ft patio in 8 × 4 in pavers with ⅛ in joints needs 1,032 pavers, 1,136 with 10 % waste (3 pallets of 400); 4 in of base is 2.96 yd³, 1 in of bedding sand 0.74 yd³, with 64 ft of edging.

How the count is made, what the layers are, and why depths and waste are entered rather than assumed.

Paver count

Each paver occupies its own face plus one joint on each of two sides: the effective module is (length + joint) × (width + joint). The total area of all shapes is divided by that module and rounded up, then the waste allowance is added and rounded up again — the order of rounding is the one stated, so a hand check will match. Pallets are counted from the pavers per pallet your supplier quotes. The pattern (running bond, herringbone, basketweave) does not change the count, only the number of cuts, which is why waste is yours to set and zero is flagged.

Base, bedding and jointing

Under the pavers sit a compacted aggregate base and a thin bedding sand layer; the joints are then filled with jointing (often polymeric) sand. Base and bedding volumes are simply area × the depth you enter, in cubic feet or litres and in cubic yards or cubic metres for ordering; compaction of the base (loose depth is more than compacted depth) is not applied — use the Aggregate & Asphalt Tonnage page with your supplier's density for weight. Jointing sand is the area × the joint fraction × the paver thickness, when a thickness is given.

Why no depths are recommended

Base depth depends on the subgrade soil, drainage, frost, and whether the surface will carry people, cars or trucks; industry guidance (such as the ICPI tech specs) gives ranges by use and climate, and local practice varies. Those are design choices for your project, so the depths are inputs with labelled samples. Edge restraint is counted as the perimeter of rectangular and circular areas; irregular areas entered as a figure carry no perimeter and are flagged.
