Dumpster Size Calculator
Debris typed line by line becomes a loose volume, the container size it needs, and — with a bulk density — the weight against the tonnage allowance.
Measured and loose volume after your bulking factor, the container size at your fill efficiency, how many of the size you have in mind, and the weight with any overweight charge.
Example: A kitchen strip-out measuring 10.2 yd³ loosens to 12.7 and needs 15 yd³ — one 20 yd container, but at 500 lb/yd³ it runs 1.18 tons over a 2 ton allowance, about $100 extra.
It is not the volume
that catches people out.
How loose volume is built up from what you measured, and why weight is usually the real limit.
From measured to loose
Debris is measured in place — a slab, a stack of cabinets, a floor area times its thickness — and then it gets broken up, which makes it take more room than it did as built. The bulking factor you set accounts for that: clean stacked timber bulks very little, lath-and-plaster or roofing a great deal. On top of that, no container ever fills completely, so the fill efficiency accounts for the air around awkward shapes. Container needed = measured × bulking ÷ efficiency, and both factors are yours.
The weight limit
Nearly every hire includes a tonnage allowance, and heavy debris reaches it long before the box is full. With a bulk density the page works out what the load weighs, compares it with the allowance, and — when the weight is the binding limit — says at what volume the allowance runs out, which is often a quarter of the container. Concrete, soil, tile, plaster and roofing are the loads where this happens. The overweight rate turns the excess into the figure that will appear on the invoice.
Limits
No container catalogue, hire price, permit requirement or landfill restriction is stored: sizes, allowances, rates and what may be mixed in one load come from your hauler and your local rules. Soil, concrete, tyres, appliances, mattresses and anything hazardous are usually a separate load or refused outright. Densities are yours from the hauler or a materials table. Nothing leaves the browser; the same four anonymous usage counts as the rest of the site apply.
