Email Subject & Preview Text Length

Character and word counts for a subject line and preview text, an inbox-row mock-up cut at limits you choose, and plain text checks — caps, punctuation, emoji.

Subject and preheader lengths, how the inbox row reads and where each is cut at your limits, and factual flags (all-caps words, repeated punctuation, emoji count, missing preview text) — no client limits embedded.

Example: "LAST CHANCE: 50% off ends tonight!!" is 35 characters and 6 words; cut at 30 it reads "LAST CHANCE: 50% off ends toni…", with one all-caps word, two exclamation marks and no preview text set.

BUILT TO BE UNDERSTOOD

Counts, not
a deliverability oracle.

What is counted, what the cut-offs mean, and what the flags are and are not.

Counts

Subject and preview text are counted in characters (Unicode code points, whitespace collapsed) and words. The inbox row joins them the way most clients do — subject, then preview text in a lighter tone — and is cut at the character limits you enter.

Cut-offs are yours

Mail clients truncate by pixel width, device and font, and the numbers differ between them and change over time, so no client’s limit is embedded. Enter the cut-off you target; the mock-up shows the result.

The flags

All-caps words, repeated exclamation marks, emoji count and an empty preheader are plain facts about the text. They are shown because they are easy to miss, not because the page can say how any filter or reader will react. Nothing leaves the browser; the same four anonymous usage counts as the rest of the site apply.

SOURCES

  • Counts on the text as typed (code points, whitespace collapsed); cut-offs are user inputs because inbox clients truncate by width, device and font rather than a fixed count
